DEGLET NOOR DATES
THE ROYAL DATE
Deglet Noor dates are the poster child of the date community, they are what most people envision when picturing dates. These pitted dates, commonly referred to as “The Royal Date” or “The Mother of All Dates”, have gained worldwide popularity for their versatility. Deglet Noor dates are not only a consumer favorite, but popular for chefs, bakers, ingredient producers, and breweries to use in their recipes.
The date ranges in color from yellow to amber and are translucent in color. They have a firm flesh, about medium sized, semi-dry, and a sugary flavor. This composition makes it the perfect substitution and healthy alternative sweetener for refined sugars in cooking and baking. Many people use them to make date sugar, syrups, or pastes to bake with. They are dry enough to chop up and add to recipes while still maintaining their consistency in cookies, breads, or other baked goods.

Deglets are a great source of iron, fiber, B-vitamins, antioxidants, flavonoids, and potassium. Unlike the Medjool Date that only contains glucose and fructose, the Deglet Noor date contains glucose, fructose, and sucrose in almost equal parts and serve as a powerhouse for quick energy. Not only do Deglet Noor dates taste great, but they are also nutrient dense.

PITTED VS. UNPITTED DEGLET DATES
Unpitted Dates
Unpitted dates are simply a whole date with the pit or seed inside. The date seed is extremely hard and inedible for humans.
Pitted Dates
Dates are called pitted when the seed (pit) is removed from the date. The date pitting process is most often automated by a machine.
Most people know that Deglet Noor dates are grown on trees, but what some may not know is that dates contain pits. Dates are similar to an avocado or a mango in that the seed is in the middle of the fruit and to remove it you must cut around it. The pit is the seed of the date, it’s hard and almost stone like. The date seed is not edible for humans but may be used for animal foods when crushed up. Most of the dates you buy at the market tend to be already pitted, but you can also easily remove the pit yourself.
To remove the pit of a date, you start by slicing the date lengthwise with a paring knife and then follow it around the fruit to remove the seed. Pits tend to be removed for better snacking and easier texture to cook and bake with.
